Oral GLP-1 drugs from Novo Nordisk and Teva are disrupting injectable weight management, broadening patient access across the USA
19 Jun 2026

Needles have long been the price of progress in obesity medicine. For years, GLP-1 therapies delivered striking results but demanded weekly injections, a routine that deterred many patients before they began. Two recent FDA approvals suggest that barrier is falling.
Oral semaglutide arrived first. Novo Nordisk launched a pill formulation under the Wegovy brand in January 2026, following FDA clearance the previous month. Close behind, Teva Pharmaceuticals secured approval on April 1st for Foundayo, an orforglipron tablet with a practical edge: patients may take it at any time, without food restrictions. For a drug class whose adherence problems are well-documented, that flexibility is not a trivial detail.
Injectable GLP-1 programmes have reshaped obesity treatment over recent years, yet needle aversion and complex dosing routines kept many adults from starting or staying on therapy. Oral alternatives lower the barrier to entry significantly, expanding the addressable population and shifting the centre of gravity from specialist clinics toward primary-care prescribing at far greater scale.
Pressing further still, Novo Nordisk has filed a supplemental application to bring Ozempic, its flagship diabetes brand, to market as an oral tablet for type 2 diabetes, with an FDA decision expected before year-end. Ed Cinca, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Patient Solutions at Novo Nordisk, framed the strategic intent plainly: "With Ozempic now available as both an injection and oral option under one brand, treatment can be individualized so patients are getting the proven semaglutide medicine that best fits their needs."
Eli Lilly, whose injectable tirzepatide franchise currently leads the weight-loss segment, is widely expected to advance its own oral pipeline candidates in response. Competition will only sharpen from here. For patients, employers, and insurers, a wider format choice also means greater negotiating leverage and, over time, downward pressure on costs.
The challenge of delivering large peptide molecules through the stomach was long considered nearly insoluble. Pharma's answer, it turns out, arrived faster than most expected.
